After working for nine years in the corporate world—in middle management at John Deere—both Tyler and Katie decided that they wanted to go into business together. Plus, there was the added appeal of being able to raise their three small children in the town where Tyler himself grew up. The process of moving from corporate middle management to the daunting world of the entrepreneur was far from easy though. "When I think back to the way we got into the hardware business, it seems like it shouldn't even be feasible," Tyler recalls with a wry smile. "We made the decision to buy the store in October 2016, our last day at John Deere came at the end of November, and we closed on the deal December 23!" By early January, the DeMaris family had moved into a basement apartment in their new home and Tyler and Katie were hard at work on an extensive store renovation that called for plenty of fresh paint, new lighting and tiles, tearing down walls, adding new signage, and more. An efficient ERP solution was needed to launch a dream into a sustainable business In between all that, they signed up with the True Value organization and began putting in place an ambitious business plan to take their dream and transform it into a profitable, sustainable reality. Success for the budding entrepreneurs was far from guaranteed. They were taking over a store that had been sorely neglected by its previous owner.
